While Cameron, Kyle and I stayed in Sydney David joined us one Sunday – meeting us at Central Station where we then jumped onto the light rail to head to Darling Harbour, to the ANMM
We have a yearly pass to the Australia National Maritime Museum, which is such good value because we have been there many times, and plan to go a few more times before leaving New South Wales!
We have been before to see the Vikings Display – which Kyle remembers because he so wanted to buy a Viking Helmet!!!
We make sure we go on Sundays by Train because its “Family Fun Day” – which means we can travel by Train, Buses or Fairy for $2.50….we usually do something in Sydney and then catch a train to Mainly.
One of the best parts of returning is to see the “Fixed Displays” and read more information that we didn’t read before. As well as entering the section where “new displays” are, they change them to different themes.
A Boat made out of Beer Cans? Beer cans, aluminium, wire netting mesh, bamboo, calico, plastic straps, tape
“This four-oared boat was designed by Lutz Frankenfeld, founder of the first Beer Can Regatta in Darwin in 1974. It is built from more than 2000 beer cans donated by the local yacht club. The cans are taped together end-to-end to keep water out of the pop-top holes” – From the Australia National Maritime Museum Website.
“This Cavalier 37 yacht BLACKMORES FIRST LADY was sailed by Australian yachtswoman Kay Cottee over a period of 189 days from 29 November 1987 to 5 June 1988 on her successful ocean voyage as the first woman to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world. The yacht includes all fixed and essential equipment for the external and internal fitout, rigging and sail wardrobe in the configuration in which it arrived after the completion of the voyage in 1988.”
Going Places ::
There was a display called “Going Places” – Perfect for homeschoolers! Perfect for little ones who love to explore and learn through “Hands on” displays! Its a place where they can drive, load, control and design all forms of transport. And learn how each different vehicle can move, what it takes to move them and how they are powered.
We all had fun in this section and can’t wait to go back again…..
David has a go before teaching Kyle and Cameron how to sail the yacht! At first both boys had no idea that by placing the sail in the right spot that it could “sail” easily across the table….they both thought they had to “Push it hard” to get it to move!
David {being a Boat Builder} Loved the Yachts. He has always wanted to sail around the world….yet I get sea sick just standing on the dock side! Guess maybe one day we will might trade our Motorhome in for a Yacht?
The three of them had a race….not sure whose Yacht won but they did have fun 🙂
Looks Easy? Nope – not at all….Kyle did manage to control the Airship through the Hoop but I tried and couldn’t! Cameron had a go and go it…can’t remember if David succeeded? But it sure was fun trying to control the airship from a remote control, luckily its not a real one and no one was on board!
Cameron was taking a Video of the day…not sure what happened to the Footage? Will have to see if its still on the camera and upload it to YouTube – mind you not sure how much footage was taken from our Visit!
Line up the lights to reflect the Solar Panels to move the Planes…David, Kyle, Cameron and I had fun doing this one together because there are four lights to hit the solar panels! The planes moves, not really fast but enough to excite the boys {and yeah me too!}
Cameron and Kyle having a Bike Racing Challenge! A cycling race to find out whether a recumbent racer or upright racer is fastest. Mind you I reckon it depends on who can peddle the fastest, who has the strongest leg muscles and who keeps on going without stopping!!!
The Ship “Moves” from side to side, and you have to try and balance the “Shipping Containers” a certain way before they “Fall Off” – some of the pink blocks are heavy, some are lighter.
The Hovercraft didn’t move fast, but they sure made a LOT of noise…actually it was not a ride I was happy to sit near but both Cameron and Kyle loved trying the Hovercraft. David helped them by pushing them around.
After spending a fair bit of time in the Australia National Maritime Museum we walked around the corner to see The Endeavour – and to wait for the Ferry to take us to Manly! Where we spent the afternoon, will share pictures here soon of beautiful Manly, before the day came to an end!
Have You Been To The Australia National Maritime Museum?
It sure is a wonderful fun kid place to spend a few hours- and adult place as well!!
Cheers
