While David and our Oldest Son was talking to the Springs Guy in Port Kembla New South Wales Kyle and I went for a walk through town. Its only a one street place, with many shops closed down but we did have fun and we even found a toilet! Actually that is why we went walking…Kyle needed a toilet 🙂
Port Kembla New South Wales ::
The RSL was closed when we were there looking at it, and I thought it was very sad how much Glass was broken laying on the ground. It had that run down empty look to the place and when I did a google search it seems like the RSL has been closed since last May. Looks like the Sub Branch was not run according to the rules/regulations and now owes over $900,000.00 !!! That explains the neglect look to the place.
We went for a walk and came across this incredible Bread Shop in the back of the Pub! Where the wonderful ladies were so very kind to come out behind their counter and show Kyle and I where the toilet was located – at the back of the Pub. Must remember to go back there to try a Pie, they sure did smell good 🙂
Love that we “Accidentally” discovered a Cafe, must remember to try the food/Coffee soon as we can.
Kyle talked me into coming back to this store for a visit! After we went to the toilet in the Pub we went back to see how they were going at the springs place. They were still busy discussing what work needed to be carried out so Kyle and I went back to this shop! Which I will share in another the blog post  “Red Point Furniture Restoration” {lots of great photos to Share and a wonderful store!!}
Some of the Shops are open and are very trendy..others have their door shut and look like they have been closed for some time. I guess Port Kembla was very popular back when the industry in the area was at full steam ahead, but now that the Port Kembla Steel industry has cut back the business area has been affected.
While we were walking back to the Motorhome a local guy stopped us for a chat. He was explaining how most of the buildings are now shut and how the council wouldn’t even take care of the area. He must have lived in Port Kembla for some time because he was sharing how busy the place used to be…and then how one by one the shop doors closed and have been closed for some time.
Yet I can see how “Port Kembla” will soon become a trendy spot – if people from Sydney {or other cities} start buying the houses in the area and renovating them {adding value} then I can see how the shops will turn around and the place could once again be a busy thriving country town. It could almost be as busy as Kiama or even Berry if their was a need for a tourist stop!
For the time being its almost like a “Ghost Town”
Have You Been To Port Kembla New South Wales?
Cheers
