Today New Life on the Road headed down to the local football field to the Antique Machinery display. The organisers had been setting up all week and every time we drove past we got to see all of the big tractors, diggers, army tanks, bulldozers, steam road rollers and even old machines for mowing the lawn and washing the clothes!
Antique Machinery
Our boys were super excited about going and waited eagerly. We thought the Yesteryear Rally was going to be finished by 3.30 pm so we headed out just after lunch time. To discover that they were already half packed up and were driving off with some of the bigger machinery. We actually had to pull over to let the huge trucks pass us as they were driving out and we were driving in.
At least we were able to walk all over the field without having to combat the huge crowds that are normally looking around the Antique Machinery. Our boys were even given a ride on a Steam Road Roller. Here is our boys having fun….
Army Tank
After the boys had a ride on the Steam Roller we headed over towards the paddock that had the really big machines. So big that we looked like little mice standing next to them! As we walked towards an Army Tank one of the organisers let us know that the army tank was in the movie “Pacific”! Gosh the boys were more excited than ever. We were told the boys could get up there and climb all over it so they did, even David got up and a good look 🙂 Nicholas was stunned at how small a space the driver of the tank has when its in operation.
Yesteryear Rally
The Antique Machinery even had an open pit where they were boiling teas, and cooking damper on a open fire. So disappointed that we were too late for the Tea and Damper. Maybe next time we see a yesteryear rally being set up we will be there on the first day, instead of half way through the second day.
Washing Machines
The boys were stunned with the washing machines. They worked with turning a handle as they were made before electricity. There was even lawn mowers that were push mowers. No wonder we used to be skinny back in the days when we had to cook on open fires, cut up our own wood, mow the lawn by hand, walk every where instead of cars and wash our clothes by hand. Talk about spoilt now days!
Grand Old Time
We had a good time, and the boys enjoyed there ride on the steam roller. As we were leaving our younger boy Kyle noticed a play pen full of puppies for sale. They were tiny puppies and they were so cute…..I nearly caved and gave in to the cries of Cameron and Kyle asking for a puppy. But I walked away knowing that as we are traveling around Australia… there is no way we could stay at National Parks with a dog. Gee they sure were cute!
If you are ever near a Antique Machinery display make sure that you get there in time to see everything. Next time we will be there on the day they open.
Cheers
Lisa Wood.

This antique machinery show would have been right up your boys alley. Looks like they had a great time even if it was closing.

It is humbling to see things that were in my household as a kid called antiques 🙂
Great to see that you had such a good time. I like going to events like this with my parents / grandparents and hearing the stories starting with “I remember when we used to….”
Looking forward to see what you get up to next!!

Hello Simon,
Thanks for stopping by New Life on the Road. I love those stories from Grandparents!! They are so cool how much they can remember. Not sure what we are up to next but it will be some adventure that we will be looking forward to sharing 🙂
Cheers

Hi Lisa, I find that stuff really interesting; to see how they did things back in the olden days…I have been to a couple of museums where they display some of the oldschool army tanks and it really is fascinating to see where we have come from and how much technology has grown.

Hi Sean,
Yes our boys loved going to the Antique Machinery and seeing all of the yesteryear Machinery! They so loved the Steam Roller – the heat from the fire really surprised them, and the whistle was so loud!

I was always fascinated by things my grandparents used… and it helped me to appreciate what we have available to us now. My washing machine and dishwasher are my two favourites! Great inventions.

Sure does make one realise how easy our lives are compared to when our grandparents where alive…and also makes you wonder how much easier our kids will have it when raising their children thanks to the latest technology! I wonder when a machine will be made that washes our clothes, dries them and folds them up!!!

The roller packed a bit of heat did it? Is it just coal that it burns?
Hello Sean,
The Roller used a combination of timber and coal. It sure was hot – I could feel it and I was standing on the ground!

Hi Lisa,
I can totally relate to the boys excitement with playing on old machinery. As a kid, I loved playing on my uncles farm machinery during the school holidays.
Its amazing to see the designs of old machinery, and understand the improvements & refinements over the years with how modern day machinery has progressed, making our live easier. I think it also gives use some sort of understanding of what life was like 30-70 years ago too.
Cheers,
Cade
Hi Cade,
We sure do have it easier compared to when our Grandmothers and Great Grandmothers were younger! Its actually amazing to see old photos of the generation back then – hardly anyone was over weight in the days of when cooking, washing clothes……when basic day to day activities were all done by hand!!
Cheers
