Our older son stayed with us a couple of weeks back {trying to think when but time has gone by far too fast to recall the exact dates!!} and I was keen to show him the “Boston Shipwreck Memorial at Basspoint Reserve” {New South Wales}
Cameron, Kyle and I have seen it before…..but I was keen to share the Memorial with our Navy Son.
And it was such a gorgeous day for a change, the sun was out and stayed out for the day – too totally not used that anymore.
The car park view was a teaser for the view to come….
Kyle LOVES Bass Point Reserve because there are many pathways, heaps of rock pools and places to explore. I love it because I get to explore with him
Reading the Board gave me chills…..the shipwreck cost the lives of four people who were trying to rescue those on board the “Cities Service Boston”
“In the Early hours of May 16th 1943, the Cities Service Boston was caught in violent 70 Knot gale. Waves rising as high as the ships funnel lashed the 9,000 Tonne tanker onto an offshore reef. To avoid breaking up in deep water the tanker was ordered full steam ahead. The tankers ripped hull ran aground on Bass Point.
Members of the local volunteer defence corp, Police, Local fisherman and 30 Soldiers from the 6 Machine Gun Battalon AIF were soon at hand. A daring rescue was undertaken to save the 62 Crewman. It was during this rescue that a huge wave swept 10 soldiers and seamen into the surging waters. Tragically four of the sailers lost their lives. Their battalon colour patch is displayed on the pathway leading to the memorial.
The “cities service boston” was later salvaged for scrap”
I love this Picture….my Oldest Son looking out at Sea while my youngest plays in the Rock pools!
The day was glorious, the spot perfect for exploring, and even though the Memorial of the Boston Shipwreck at Bass Point Reserve touches feelings within we are glad we got to share the experience with our oldest son, and with you!
Have You Been To The “Cities Service Boston” Memorial?
Cheers
Lisa
