I had time between appointments yesterday {was in town on Business} and thought I would try and find as many Geocaches as possible. Mind you I didn’t have my sweet boy with me so it wasn’t as much fun, and a few of the caches were set up for kids so I will have to go back with him another time!
There was one Cache that I was keen to find because it was at the Bundaberg Lions Remembrance Park
“This Plaque recognises The Service by 314,000 young men who underwent national service training for Australian’s Defence Between 1951 – 1972. They also serve who only stand and wait”
Can we please pause there for one moment, and read that number again. 314,000 young men who went training for Australias defence. What a waste of time, money and men’s lives, and for what? I wished there was such a thing as “no war, only peace”
If Australia directed all of their National Service Pay for one month into feeding and helping out third world countries, there would be no poverty, no one hungry, villages would be housed, feed and water within their reach. Why do we waste money on trying to train our men to protect our country when if there was no such thing as Prime Minister ego trips then there would be no wars. Really think about that for one moment – wasn’t War World 2 meant to be the “war to end all wars”.
Yet really there has been wars going on every since 1918, might not be World Wars but nevertheless there are wars going on. And who starts it? Men with their egos and mouths. So Men up high in the powers that be – have a good look at how many men have been training for our Defence forces and work out a better system so that the world was more at peace, and that the money was spent for more worthwhile causes – there would be no World Wide Famine Issues, there would be no World Wide Killing of our men.
“Lest We Forget”
I am not being disrespectful to those that have been brave and sacrificed their own lives for Australia, to you I take my hat off and hope you are remembered for ever. I hope you know how much you are loved and respected.
I am having a say about the way the powers that be look at how to run our countries. If for one day they could all leave their own egos out of the conversations, and look at the bigger picture, imagine how much better our world would be. We wouldn’t have to train our boys to fight, they could be training to help.
I see the world differently now that two of my sons are trained to protect their country. I am so glad that there are rules and regulations so that both sons can not serve together on deployment on the same ship.
So good that both Women and Men are remembered.
In memory of those in the Korean War – 1950 to 1956. May you be resting for evermore more xxx
“In memory of all the Royal Australian Navy and allied seagoing personnel both uniformed and merchant marine who paid the supreme sacrifice whilst training in conflict in defence of a free world Lest We Forget”
47th Australian Infantry Battalion Wide Bay Regiment To the memory of those who gave their lives and those who served in the defence of Australia World War II South West Pacific 1939-1945
Its good to read about history, and to remember those that were brave to fight for our country. Bundaberg Lions Remembrance Park is located near a very busy road, and there are swings for little ones but no fences. Its a great little park for play and read.
And its good there are more and more Remembrance Parks across Australia, but I wished we learnt from history.
Do You Have A Remembrance Park In Your Town?
Cheers

An absolute marvellous write up, Lisa, I was one of those numbers!
I understand what you are saying and your feelings on the matter!
Just a bit of info as I know, National Service was introduced to accommodate the multitude of idle youth in Australia in those years. A few ideas were put forward and the three month army training scheme was adopted. Regular Army personnel were used (gave them something to do), the Nacho didn’t get rich quick, believe me 🙂 .
The present day system is to pay them the dole, let them sit at home, wander the streets, do drugs among other things.
The Nation Service Scheme and present day Dole System have similar costs.
Australia pays out millions of dollars in Foreign Aid.
I am happy I did the Nacho term, it taught me a lot. I did go on to join the Army, spent six years from ’53 to ’59.
