Going on holiday with your kids should be fun and educational at the same time. You want your kids to learn but to also enjoy themselves rather than being so bored they’d prefer to stay home! Australia is known for being a kid-friendly destination, bursting with plenty of educational and fun nature-based activities and attractions. Here’s a look at just five of the possibilities.
1. Lady Elliot Island
There’s nothing better than being out in the sparkling blue ocean. The only things that could top this would be, say, some spectacularly unique coral, brightly coloured tropical fish, some turtles and birds. Well, this location has plenty of that too! Lady Elliot Island is an island on the Great Barrier Reef where you can paddle leisurely and go snorkelling – or maybe even diving – to witness all that natural beauty for yourself!
2. Fraser Island
If you prefer mixing some fun on the beach with walks through a rainforest, then this place is for you! The island is close to the Sunshine Coast and boasts some of the country’s most pristine beaches, while offering some amazing rainforest tracks for you to enjoy a long walk. While in the rainforest, take a dip in a lovely freshwater lake. And when you’re on the beach, you may even get to see a dolphin or two! One of the best ways to enjoy this destination is in the capable hands of a touring expert such as Sunset Safaris, who offer wonderful Fraser Island Tours from Noosa (another place well worth visiting).

3. Ningaloo Reef
Off the northern coastline of Western Australia, the Nigaloo Reef is home to the world’s biggest population of whale sharks – you won’t find more in one place anywhere else. UNESCO declared this a World Heritage Site in 2011 because of its significant contribution to marine life conservation in the country. The area has numerous protected sites and the coral reef is situated close to a major land mass. Not only is this a rare phenomenon, but it makes the reef very accessible to visitors!
4. Norfolk Island
Rumour has it that this island has the freshest air on earth (after Antarctica). The kids will love playing on the beach and snorkelling first thing in the morning, not to mention the sight of ducks and cows almost everywhere you go! Horse riding is also popular on the island, as is taking long walks amongst the green hills. Combine these activities with a themed dinner complete with a re-enactment of the Mutiny of the Bounty, plus the Sound and Light show, where you’ll get to see what life was like in Norfolk during settlement days.
5. Elanda Point Education Centre and Adventure Park
This is part of the famous Great Sandy National Park. It consists of everglades and forests, accompanied by streams and lakes. There are extensive facilities including canoes, kayaks, motorboats, sailboats, and hiking equipment. Whatever adventure you’re after, you’ll find it here. You can also join guided group safaris and eco-adventures that are popular with families, students, couples… well, just about everyone!
If your family has had enough of theme parks and the usual holiday activities, you should definitely give these nature-based excursions around Australia a try. Whether it’s walking through forests, playing on the beach, looking for wildlife, or going on a scuba-diving or boating adventure, you’ll find a destination and activities to excite your whole family!
