The other day the post arrived and it was so exciting for our boys!! They waited around the box like it was Christmas time…itching to get the box open! They were super excited to get their hands on all of their Homeschooling Books.
Homeschooling Can Begin
As we are getting “Rose The Lifestyle Challenge Bus” ready to travel around Australia I am getting the boys Homeschooling Books organised. I ordered all of the books that they needed in one big order so that when they are finished with each book I am able to order little bits here and there. Some of these text books will last for about 12 months – others will last for about 6 months! Here is our crazy boys waiting for me to open the box…..
After Handing Out The Books
Once I marked off each book and made sure that they were all in the box, the three younger boys took off to complete their work. The older two boys were not happy because the homeschooling system is different to the school system, and the grades are different from Queensland compared to Victoria! So much for Queenslanders being the “Smart State” – we are about 2 years behind the NSW/VIC state system.
Some of our boys will be finished really quickly with their Homeschooling Books while a few of those books will last the year out. Hayden had a few books that were harder than what he has done before, but we are trying to catch him up to where he should be within the Homeschooling area. Kyle (our youngest) was the easiest as he has two text books and an art set which goes together with learning his ABC’s and 123’s.
Homeschooling The Older Boys
With Homeschooling in Australia I am not new to the ideas and the way of homeschooling, but I am new to homeschooling five boys so I know that there will be issues as we are traveling. At the moment I am trying to approach the whole idea of homeschooling with the attitude of “These are the pages you need to do each day to complete your work. Its up to you when you do them”. With our older two I have given them the information booklet that lets them know how much work they need to complete each day. I have not given them set pages, nor told them when they have to do their work.
Homeschooling The Younger Ones
The younger three are going to be the ones where I will be directing them a little bit more. Not so much as a teacher role, but more of a guidance of “OK – its now time to get our school work completed”. I then give Nicholas and Cameron 2-3 pages from each text book, with a date at the top of the page. So they know that those pages need to be completed on that date. Kyle is a lot easier as he has maths, reading, writing, English and art. He has an art pack that ties in with all of his work to help him to remember what he has done that day!
So I am off for a busy week that will be packed with sight seeing, getting the Motorhome Curtains made and Homeschooling our five crazy boys 😉
Cheers

New Life on the Road
Receiving your package of Homeschooling Books sounds very exciting. I love have a new book, I hope your boys do too. Sounds like you are very organised with it all. The kids should manage well with their studies and it will encourage self discipline – always a good asset to have.

Hello Melanie,
It was exciting. They have enough books to keep them going for awhile at least 🙂

I like the approach you have taken with the older ones, by not telling them what they have to do and when they have to do it, they can organise time for themselves and make a system so they know for sure that the work will be in on time to ensure they get good results. This type of organised planning will help them in the real world, far more than being spoonfed information.

Hi Sean,
I am hoping that they will get into their own little routine and continue with flying through their work. If they can keep going fast they will actually finish year 11 and year 12 in one year 🙂
Its a shame that there is no school here that does allow the children to self educate. America has one and its very successful.
Cheers
Lisa
I think the answer to that is simply that America is alot more entrepreneurial than us, and we take on board the attitude of “I did it like that, so that’s the way you are going to do it.”

I just love how you have set out your site. I could do with some lessons i think. So the excitement mounts for you and your family. I did a 3 year stint working around oz. Your going to love it. Get a what tree, fish, animal rock etc is that books. They will learn so much more than school could ever teach them.

Hi Lisa
So many books to keep track of, the art pack looks like fun. You would think the education system would be the same throughout Australia. It is hard to believe that QLD is 2 years behind NSW/VIC state system.

Hi Kerry,
It is a huge surprise that we are so far behind. The boys are having so much fun with their art pack!! I am amazed at how much they are learning from talking, and helping David to build the bus. They sure are learning more with “Hands On” then they would do if they went to school 🙂
Cheers
