There are many ways to paint a Motorhome – from spray painting to roll on or brush. This is How David Painted Our Motorhome Roof Easily….compared to what I thought it would be like.
Getting The Roof Ready My Way ::
Yep I was Using A Paint Scraper ~
but it was too going to take too long!
Getting The Roof Ready Davids Way ::
David uses a sander!
and has the job finished in no time!
Finding Supplies In Mackay
We are finding it really tricky in Mackay at the moment with supplies. David (being a Boat Builder/Caravan Builder) normally can speak with companies and get a great deal. After all he knows what he is looking for and knows what he needs. Yet it is seems that unless you are a big business or a mining company they don’t really care!
I wish I could name the company that was less than helpful last week when David went in and seen them. But because I would rather focus on the Good Customer Service that we did end up getting with a paint supplier in Scarborough I will keep my mouth shut. Lets just say that the company that couldn’t answer David’s question and who was not keen on selling him the paint, lost a sale that day. As well as referrals from New Life on the Road.
Good Customer Service Over the Phone
David ends up ringing around to find the Thermoshield Paint that we needed. He found the most amazing company in Scarborough. And spoke to a lady named Jenny. She was that helpful that she answered David’s many questions….on a Saturday. Then let him know that she was actually out for her birthday celebrations, and would he mind calling back on Monday morning to place the order.
David was stunned to say the least. It was a weekend. She had her phone on her and was at the Goldcoast. Yet was willing to share what she knew about the paint and to let him know how much he needed as well as the undercoat that he would need for the fibreglass sections!
That is damn good customer service.
Monday morning David calls the company. Within minutes the order was being organised.
Being members of CMCA we were given a discount.
That day the order was sent out.
The next day the order arrived ?? Never ever have we had such fast delievery, and such helpful advice from one company.
How He Got The Motorhome Roof Ready Easily ::
-
Scraped the old flaky paint off with the hand sander
-
Re-sanded again to make sure!
-
Washed the Roof with Sugar Soap and scrubbed it with a broom/hosed it off with water
-
Waited till it Dried completely (overnight)
-
Used the Primer Pack Paint where needed
-
Made sure it was all masked up wtih newspaper/tape so that the parts that did not need painting were safe.
The Front and Back has Fibreglass sections ~
Primer Paint (mixing two paints together) was used.
The newspaper is covering the windows ~
and the first coat is going on!
Three coats later, more paint has been ordered. David is thinking that because its been so very long since it has been painted and because so much paint was taken off with the scraper/sander that its actually going to take a few coats to cover the blotchy look! And hey its Thermoshield paint so the more coats the better.
David Rolls Another Coat On ~
Its looking good but still needs more 🙂
It has made a huge difference inside with the heat.
If only it could be used all over the Motorhome. But because its such a flat look to the end result its not suitable for the sides – imagine if there was a heat resistance paint that could be used all over the Motorhome….now that would be ideal. Making the Motorhome cooler in summer and warmer in winter sounds perfect.

Thanks for sharing this step-by-step. I have the paint for the roof of my bus but haven’t yet gotten around to doing it.
Its easy to do Lauren 🙂
And has made such a difference to the temp. inside! All the best with painting yours.
We found the Thermoshield paint excellent too and used it on our roof as well before putting on the multitude of solar panels that we need for free camping. Ro is glad it is a job he doesn’t have to do oftern. He has a little fear of heights and getting older and stiffer in the joints doesn’t help! http://robbiebago.blogspot.com.au/2013/08/ceramic-painting-rv-roof.html

Hi Michelle, so very sorry but I didn’t see your comment until now – weird hey!
So glad you guys used the Thermoshield paint as well 🙂 Hope it holds up to the test of time xxx
For best results Thermoshield should be sprayed on as painting and rolling push the microsopic beads to one side.
Preparation and application and also having an understanding of compatible products ensures long life and a successful outcome.
Normal Paint is about 80 microns each coat of thermoshield is about 250 microns.
This is why it is not sold as a DIY product. And no warranty on DIY
Thanks Debbie for sharing your information about Thermoshield – we would have loved to spray it on when we did paint our Motorhome roof but it wasn’t possible where we had parked up.
David has looked at the roof recently and it needs to be re-done. We hope to use a spray painter next time 🙂
Hello, I am looking for a good paint to paint the top of my old caravan with, and came across your website. I see this was posted in 20I2. How has the job lasted – are you happy with it? Did you use any sealant on the joints before you started? I see the ad for Thermoshield says spraying is recommended, since painting of rolling pushes the microscopic beads aside. What did you do and do you think it really matters? Thanks for your answers – this is such an important job I want to do it right.
we are happy with how it helps with the heat/cold but we don’t like how it looks, highly recommend the sealant to go over the roof. No idea how it would look with spraying it, when we painted the roof we had no other option but to roll it 😉
All the best with your caravan and painting the roof with thermoshield, let us know how it goes 😉

RV Roof Magic sounds like the paint to have when painting RV/Motorhome roofs 🙂 David looked at our roof recently and has realised that we are at the stage where we need to repaint it again – do you sell RV Roof Magic in Australia?
That is brilliant. I was planning to paint my motorhome similar to on the blog where I found suggestions from Google. I wonder if it stays longer than I expected. Or, does it cracks when exposed to heat and sunlight?

Good Question! Maybe you need to ask the company who makes the paint? We are in need of repainting it again – we just haven’t had time or a day without any wind. We think that spray painting it might help it to sit way better than rolling it but we had no choice at the time 🙂
