Are you itching to leave the humdrum of everyday life? Are you ready to experience things in new and exciting ways? Have you been longing to pack up all your belongings and just drive? You are certainly not alone. Many people – even entire families – have left behind common jobs and taken to the road to experience life in new ways. Are you ready to take this step? Here are a few ways to help you prepare for your departure.
Sell
You will essentially be leaving your old life behind. Think about what is essential and what you can do without. In order to fund a life on the road, some things need to be left behind and sold. Sell as much as you can. Is that important to you? Will you miss it if it’s gone? Try to get rid of as much as you can so that you can travel as light as possible. Have you considered what you’ll do with your house? If you do not have anyone to pass it on to, sell it. Who knows how long you’ll be gone, and once you return, your needs will have changed.
Store
What about the items you cannot or do not want to sell? Consider investing in a self-storage unit. There will, no doubt, be items that you cannot part with, like valuable keepsakes and various other household items. Self-storage facilities like Fort Knox are a great solution for people who want to hit the road but are bogged down by too many possessions. Find a central location that you can drop in to whenever you are back in the area. Click here to find out more about self-storage units. No matter how long you are gone for, little things can still draw you back to the places you remember from various parts of your life. Placing items in storage can help keep some of the old life behind and help you to begin afresh if you should ever plant more permanent roots.
Travel
How are you going to get around? Have you researched modes of transportation that can keep you comfortable while also bearing various conditions? Many families who choose a life of travelling invest in motor homes, coaches, or camper vans. They might also have a smaller vehicle to get around in for shorter trips. How you travel will be as much an extension of you as your choice to live on the road. What is most important to you when living and travelling? Your transportation should provide it.
Plan
Where will you go? What will you see? While choosing to live life on the road does not require a road map (although that may come in handy) or a schedule, you should still make a list. Treat it as a set of guidelines rather than hard-and-fast rules though. What do you want to accomplish? What destinations are must-visits? Your list should have a strong foundation of goals but also be flexible.
How has your life on the road changed you? Would you change anything or prepare any differently? Post your comments below.
