Yesterday we had to return our Hired Car and then wait for David to pick us up. So Cameron, Kyle and I walked from the Hire Car Company down to North Wollongong Beach, where we Discovered More Of Wollongong….
Incredible to think that we only discovered this part of Wollongong by mistake the other night while David and I stayed at the Novotel in North Wollongong. We walked from there into town for dinner, and was walking back to the hotel when we walked straight past the Canons!
These Houses So Close Together ~
they remind me of houses in Sydney!!!
We had seen these Yard Animals ~
for sale down in Mogo a few months ago, wonder if this is where these came from?
Would Love To Know The History ~
of this spot but there was no information there!
*** UPDATE – One of our wonderful readers has asked family for the history of the canons *****
Thanking you so very Much to Maggie Wright Brother – Ian Whittington who has provided this for us all ……..
History of the Canons ::
# Smiths Hill Fort was a fort at North Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. The fort was also known as Wollongong Fort.
# Built between 1891-1893 to provide a deterrent to a possible Russian attack upon Wollongong Harbour.
# The fort is a concealed battery on high ground above Wollongong Harbour with underground rooms for supplies, ammunition and shelter with emplacements for two 80-pound cannons on iron carriages, and a 1 1/2 inch quick firing gun.
# It was used extensively for company training and maintained by the Wollongong-Bulli Half Company.
# In 1946, the fort was filled with rubble and dirt. The fort was dug out and restored in 1988 and two cannons were restored and reinstalled at the fort.
Here is Another View of Wollongong Harbour ~
My boys so crack me up….they were like “Oh so there are Two Lighthouses”
I was like “Yep, how many times have you been to Wollongong Harbour and looked at them both?”
Cameron Stood Here For Ages ~
And worked out that the Cover only had one Bolt Securing it down!!
The rest had rusted/Broken away – Homeschooling Unschooling Lesson!!
We Looked Down onto North Wollongong Beach ~
Where we had to head to find toilets for Cameron and Kyle!!!
Loved This Wall ~
Behind the Statue at North Wollongong Beach!
After the trip to the Toilet we went back up to the Canons. Where Kyle Found two Love Locks but I could only take a clear pic of this one, the other love lock details were too old to read!!!
It was getting cold, and then David turned up and we had to rush off to pick our Older Son up from the Train Station….but we will return to North Wollongong Beach on a warmer day, especially so that we can swim in the Beach Pool. Its funny how much More of Wollongong we keep on discovering!!
Linking up with Jacana “Preston Beach” – Totally Thursday.

Do You Know The History Behind These Canons?
Cheers

New Life on the Road
I really love the quirky way you have covered Wollongong, and yes I can imagine the boys being fascinated by the loose cover with only one bolt. I have an old photo of my brother and myself sitting on a cannon one on either side but never thought to ask Mum where it was. Love the saddle bag post box and of course those gorgeous boys of yours,
seems like you had a great day
xxx lisa
There is so much here to discover, every time we think we have seen all there is to Wollongong we walk down another street and see something new!!
The saddle bag letter box is so cool – that pic of you and your brother sounds so very cute 🙂
Thanks for your kind words – right back at you with your gorgeous kids xx
We have done a lot of walking along the coastal areas in Woolloongong. My brother used to live there and we stayed with him for a week when we returned from our 3 month RTW in 2010. We couldn’t get over how beautiful the beaches were. We did the coastal walk from Bulli to Fairy Meadow which took 4 or more hours.

The Coastal walk sounds ideal, must see when I can get everyone on board for it 😉
Its amazing how pretty Wollongong Coast is, and how many different beaches there are!
Hi Lisa, Wollongong looks like a delightful town. I like that saddelbag mailbox! The harbor with the lighthouses (yes, two!) looks very picturesque. It’s interesting that a reader got you the history of the canons. Your boys are adorable.

It is incredible how a Reader found out the history behind the canons, was also good to find out how they got there!!
We are loving that there is more to Wollongong then we first thought.
Thanks – I think my two youngest are really cute 🙂
What a fun day out! 🙂 There’s so much to see and do. I especially like the saddle bag mail box. 🙂

Love the saddlebag letterbox! It looks like your boys enjoyed the canons and the park. It was interesting to read the history of the canons – and amazed that they thought they would be attacked by the Russians in the 1800s! We haven’t been to Woolongong – so thank you for taking us for this little tour.
Have a great weekend, and thank yo for stopping by my blog this week.
Heading to Wollongong in two week. Glad I got to enjoy your little tour before I go. Now I know what to look out for. 🙂
Amazing photos. I actually lived in Wollongong for a whole 15 months as a child. So thanks for sharing this it was great to revisit. Liked the photo of the wall of the surf lifesavers – they do such a wonderful job.
