There is never enough Motorhome Storage solutions when traveling with a family of seven so anywhere we can add more cupboards to we will! David is clever – he can put his hands to anything and find a solution. Here is a “Spilling Batten” technique that he has used to create overhead cupboard space at the front of “Rose The Lifestyle Challenge Bus”
Here is Part 1 of Motorhome Storage Solutions using the “Spilling Batten” techniques!
Motorhome Storage
Each and every cupboard in the Motorhome is going to be packed tight! It will be packed with only items that we must use. The boys are going to have a self space each in the big wardrobe. Then in the Bunk Beds we will be creating more Motorhome Storage with nets added to the wall so that they can have books (School Books) in the Motorhome. Under the Bunk Bed is where the batteries are kept – yet down the other end will be a spot for a few toys….(ops I meant items that we need!)
More Motorhome Storage Space
The Lounges have been re-built to hold items under nearth. David has made the Lounges so that they will have “Doors” at the front of the bottom of them. Its not enough to hold a lot of big items but will be enough Motorhome Storage to have smaller items stored. Under the Big Queen size Bed at the back of the Bus is another Storage Box. David spilit the base of the Bed into sections that the front of the bed base will have doors that open up for a spot to store items. I think in that space will be clothes that we store for the next season.
Shoe Storage Space
Near the door at the front of the bus David is building a cupboard that will hold shoes. It is going to be a skinny cupboard but will have shelfs so that we can find our shoes easily. Near the Drivers window (next to the New Bus Seat) David is also making a cupboard that can hold his Books and a spot for drinks. He likes books that share the best camping spots in Australia and also Camping Magazine so that will be a handy Motorhomes Storage Solution.
Here is Part 2 of Motorhome Storage Solutions for the “Spilling Batten” technqiue.
The Spilling Batten Technique is Boat Building Technique that David used many times to build boats/caravans. He has made the “Spilling Tool” to create the front cupboard. It saved a lot of time because once it was finished the front slid in easily.
There are four parts to the vlog series so if you are keen you can see Part 3 and Part 4 over on Motorhome Storage Solutions! If you have any questions on the Spilling Batten techniques let us know and David can answer them here at New Life on the Road 🙂

You really have put a lot of thought into your motorhome storage solutions and can’t wait to see how the cupboard turns out. Spilling looks so interesting.

Thanks Jackie – I am so looking forward to when the cupboard if fully lined with Marine Carpet and the flooring is completed!!

Looks like you’re handy with the tools. The engineers at Ikea would be proud that you’ve managed to take advantage of as many air pockets as possible and convert them to functional space. Great work

Hello David,
Yeah Dave is really clever with creating, building and ideas 🙂 We so love Ikea furniture!!! Never thought about it – maybe Dave should work for their design department!!!
Cheers

It’s been so interesting listening to your story and preparation. You really do need to be organised when it comes to motorhome storage. My 10 year old daughter has an amazing ability to organise stuff when limited storage is available – perhaps I can send her over to give you a hand ;)?

Hello Hilary,
That would be fantastic – be great to have a helping hand – can I borrow her when I have to unpack the boxes that are in storage and need to be sorted out for what we are taking on the Motorhome!!!
Cheers

I’ve noticed that a volume of storage being added is high in the vehicle. What does this do to the centre of gravity & stability when fully loaded?

Hello Terry,
I had to ask Dave about this one !! (i never thought about it before) – The overhead storage cupboards are not going to have anything heavy stored in it. The boot (at the back of the bus under the main bed) is where the heavy items will be stored. So it should all be ok.

David, you’re a genius with your motorhome storage solutions. I wonder what else Einstein could have come up with if he had had a chat with you first.

Hi Wal,
That would have been an interesting conversation. I would have been running all my half baked ideas past him to try get the bus running on water and solar energy:)
Oh the challenges of travelling. What to pack and what not to pack…. However, sounds like you are preparing well and will make wise choices on what to take with you.

Hi David,
Wow, that’s a great technique, I learnt something new today.
As a CAD designer and ex-tradie I found myself nodding my head through both the videos. In days where computers are used to make life easy, I think skills like the Spilling Technique you used will eventually be lesser know, which is a real shame.
I can’t wait to see the finished project.
Cheers,
Cade
Hi Cade,
It is a shame that a lot of the old techniques are dissappearing. I have used this technique on everything from floor tiles to hull sheeting on large boats and it works every time. I will be doing some posts on other old techniques (some dating back to the ancient Egyptians) that anyone can still use today and as accurate as any modern piece of equipment costing thousands of dollars.
Cheers,
Dave
It’s a massive project Lisa and David.
When you have it all completed I’m sure you will beem with pride.
Looks like David really knows what he is doing.
He sure is handy with the tools!
