Ned Kelly Last Stand

Posted by on December 3, 2013

I am still trying to play catch up on our Trip from Melbourne to Wollongong! So long ago yet seems like only yesterday that we went down to see our second son’s Navy Graduation.

Loved driving slowly and stopping as much as possible on the way back, mind you we still missed so very much along the way! We did get to see Street Entertainment in St Kilda, the Melbourne Zoo and a Tour of the Bee Farm {sorry no photos because my camera battery died that day!! :( }

We left the Mornington Pensisula Victoria on the Monday 28th October.

We left a bit later then usual because we had to source the Op Shops for more winter clothes – we knew we wanted to head to the snows but we did not have enough clothes for the cold climate!

Along the way we stopped at a Fantastic Petrol Station – not sure exactly where but just outside of Melbourne – for a quick pit stop. Where we discovered that with handing your Car Keys over we were given Keys to the Cleanest Showers/Toilets we have ever seen. One of our boys didn’t make it in time to the Public toilets so he had to have a shower!!

On The Road ::

We headed towards a surprise for our boys. David planned where to go each day, and he wanted to make sure that we stopped at Glenrowan to see Ned Kelly Last Stand. We spent hours there, looking in the Gift Stores, the Museum and then walking through the town tracing the steps of Ned Kelly last moments before capture. It was actually a great way to learn about the history – must try and find a DVD so that we can remember the information we learnt.

THE FAMILY HISTORY

“While the Kelly Family Scraped A Living From A Rented Diary Farm, Ned and the Older Children Attended the Avenel School.

Ned Won Lasting Fame as an 11 Year Old by rescuing Seven Year old Dick Shelton from a Flooded Creek. When Red Kelly was sentenced to six months for Butchering a Neigbour’s stray Calf, Ned’s Bravery may have won his Father lenient treatment – a generous remission and imprisonment in the local lock-up instead of a distant Gaol. But when Red returned to the family, he also returned to the bottle and died of dropsy scarcely more than a year later. Ellen Kelly was a widow at 33, with Seven Children.

Ned Kelly just turned 12, stepped into his Father’s Boots”

Trying to read most of it…..

“As a 14 year old, Ned was apprenticed to Irish-Born Harry Power (real name Johnston) last of Australia’s great highwayman-bushrangers. Harry was middle-aged dumpy and grumpy but a brave horseman and bushman, supported by a network of friends spanning a huge area of the colony

In 1870 Ned was arrested and narrowly escaped convinction of Highway Robbery. Soon after Harry was betrayed by one of ?
uncles to be captured, tried and sentenced to 15 ?”

PENTRIDGE AND THE HONEST YEARS

“At 16, Ned was convicted for innocently receiving a stolen horse. The man who stole it was given 18 months for illegial Us. Ned was sentenced to three years hard labour – after getting a brutal pistal-whipping from a tropper who had committed perjury to gain his conviction.  Ned served his time in Beechworth Goal. Pentridge Prison and on a convict hulk at Willamstown. As a bearded 19-year old he left prison in February 1874, and spent three years in hard, honest, work before being drawn into the squatter-selector land war, now made more bitter by bad seasons and severe recession”

    Oh my gosh, Lisa, I could settle in all day at at the Ned Kelly museum! I absolutely love history and especially where there is some mystique or controversy to it. I did a Wikipedia search for a quick read and there is are chapters worth of writing on him just on the main hit! That armour is so wicked cool and I love being able to see original stuff even if it is through a glass case. Loved this post! :)
