After the tour of the Ned Kelly Museum, we decided to do a Walk Through Town to see all of the information about Ned Kelly, and his family information. It was quite eerie to walk through town and think about what actually went down all those years ago….
Ned Kelly Walk Through Town ::
“The Glenrowan Inn. Ann Jones. Best Accommodation. The above signboard is a replica of the original which was erected here in 1874. The front verandah of the inn to which police laid siege on June 28th 1880 extended westward from this place, to the corner of Siege Street and Beaconsfield Parade”
Was incredible to read about the Kelly Gang!!!
Business was looking up for Ann Jones, Until the Gang took over her Inn.
Siege Street ~
The Lay Out of all those found dead.
In Memory of Anne Jones
“It was hot work shooting at the Police. Joe Byrne stopped to grab a drink at the Bar, but was shot in the groin and fatally wounded.
Three Hostages were caught in the cross fire and died :: George Metcalf, Martin Cherry, and sweet young Jack Jones.
“We remained there expecting every minute to be shot until about half past nine in the morning” ~ James Reardon
Eventually the hostages were released, but the siege continued with regular exchanges of gunfire.
Finally the Police decided on a last, decisive act. At 2.50pm, the inn was set alight to flush out the last of the gang.
“All eyes were now fixed on the silent building….still no sign of life” ~ The Argus, 29 June 1880″
“Fire Away You Bloody Dogs, You Cant Hurt Us” ~Ned Kelly
“Confident he was bullet proof , Ned moved closer to the police ~ into their waiting gun sights. Constable Gascoigne recognised the muffled voice inside the Helmet, took aim and fired, ripping into Ned’s arm and foot. In disbelief, Gascoigne saw Ned hobble away, just as rockets lit up the sky.”
“Had their been without their Armour,
and could take proper aim at us,
not one of us could have escaped being shot” ~ Superintendent Francis Hare, 1881
PISTOL FOUND HERE ~

Walking Past The Spot ~
Where The Pistol Was Found!
Taking Hostages ~
Were Men in the Tents were railway workers, baled them up and took them as hostages!
Black Smith Shop
“The Figure Stopped, raising one foot onto a log and aiming and firing.
Shot after Shot was fired at, but without effect” ~ Australasian Sketcher ~ 3 July 1880
Ned Kelly Was Wounded, Unmasked and Disarmed ~
According to Policeman Steele
Prior to his Capture ~
dazed and wounded, Ned Kelly Hobbled
past the Inn to where his Horse stood in a Fan Shaped Clump of trees.
Plenty of Mates Supporting Ned Kelly!
EVEN with only one hand ~
he still continued to Challenge the Police!!
The Old Police Station ~
Where the Betty Williams Rose Garden Is Now.
The Station is where the Press Stayed out of the way, but was close enough to get the story.
“Some Reporters ventured close to the action – into ditches and behind trees. They scribbled, made sketches and shouted out warnings. From their Safe Spots, the press and spectators witnessed the siege and Ned’s last moments of freedom.
In the Dim light of the morning, with the steam rising from the ground, he looked like the ghost of Hamlet’s father with no head” – The Argus 5 July 1880.
“Badly Wounded, strapped of Armour and guns, Ned was carried to the Station for treatment and the last rites. In Melbourne and Sydney crowds stood outside newspaper offices, and brought business and traffic to a standstill. Within Hours, news of Ned’s capture reached London. By Noon more reporters and spectators arrived at Glenrowan, Photographers set up the bulky wet-plate cameras and developed images in a tent!!“
The Replica Building where Ned Kelly received Medical attention after he was shot.
Yet there is still that little bit of doubt and wonder…..was Ned Kelly really captured and killed or did someone pose as him? Did one of his brothers say it was Ned?
Guess unless we were there we would never ever know!
But it was so interesting reading and standing where Ned Kelly and his Gangs walked, and interesting reading about the History of the Most Famous Australian Bushrangers!
Have You Been To Glenrowan To See Ned Kelly?
Cheers
Lisa
New Life on the Road.
Another fantastic post from you, Lisa! Your last post was a great introduction and education for me about Ned Kelly whom I had never heard of. And this is great follow-up to that story! I’m like you guys, in that I love to stand at historical places where great events occurred. To close my eyes and imagine it happening right there back 150 years ago. This reminded me in some regards to Custer’s Last Stand here in Montana, USA 🙂
