Have you ever thought about changing your life competely? I mean like changing your life so much that you are not even living in your own house? Well one family has dared to dream, and then taken action on that dream. They decided to take their 8 year old twins out of school, out of the normal life and hit the road on Bikes.
One Amazing Families Adventure on Bikes
What about 9,000 miles of riding a bike – across the Dessert, the hot sun, the wind, the rain, the mud, up hills and down hills? That is what I have been reading about – actually I was so spell bound that I read the whole book yesterday – reading most of it out loud to my son Cameron as he was so interested in what I was reading about!
The Family of Four Setting Off on their Adventure on Bikes!
Twenty Miles Per Cookie
I could not stop reading the book – I wanted to keep on reading….I wanted to make sure that they were able to drive out of their driveway the first day, and then keep on track with each day – they had set themselves goals of how far they would travel each day!
Along the way they meet amazing people – amazing people who were so kind to go out of their way to help Nancy and JohnΒ & their twins. One day it was so hot – and they were so thirsty! Two men that they had meet before, stopped and gave them cold bottles of Gatorade.
They even brought them a whole case of the Gatorade! Because of the lack of storage space the kind “Road Angels” came up with a clever plan to make sure they received every single bottle as they still kept riding. (you will so want to read how that plan is put into action!)
Walking through Rivers π
Then there were times where complete strangers stopped and helped the family. From food, water and to even giving the boys lifts to the next hill – plus they gave the family places to stay when they did not even expect.
Their faith in human kind was re-stored and they were able to stay with many people that they have never meet before, or who have never heard of the family before.
Riding Up Steep Hills – going down steep declines!
Both boys had to learn how to ride, to peddle hard. They had to learn how to push through their boundries and they learnt from early on that there was no point to complaining – if they were tired they had to keep going. If they were hungry and they had no food left, then they had to keep pedalling no matter what!
If they ran out of water they had to keep going to they reached the next town.
What really got my attention was how the boys had their toys at the start of the trip, and then soon realised that their adventure around them was their life. They made up stories, they made up games, they played with their environment. They didnt have the latest gadet, the latest DVD or the DS games to keep them happy. They played like kids used to play – with whatever they could find.
Riding Through Mexico Provided Many Challenges!
There were even times when they were faced with dangerous hi-ways, losing their sons in the dark, fending off animals into their “Pennies” that soon worked out how to eat what food they had – there was even the time where they didnt think about the rain during the night – and woke up to find everything water logged.
At times John felt like he could not go on.Β Even the boys thought about giving up – but as a family they pushed through their limits, through their challenges and knew that they had an end goal in sight.
Halfway through the book, you will be sitting on the edge of your seat. Wondering if they are able to face the rough environment that mother nature provides for them as they ride up hills that are so steep that walking would be faster then staying on the bike.
You will also want to soon join them on their adventure. Nancy tells their journey in a way that you feel like you have never ever done anything in life that could top what they do together. You will want to buy a bike, you will want to see more of your own country and you will want to see a different way of living.
Look at their faces as they face their first pass and make it!
If you think that you can’t achieve your goals – then you need to read “Twenty Miles Per Cookies –Β 9,000 miles of Kid-Powered Adventures”. Within a few minutes you will be hooked. You will want at least half of what of what the family of four experience together. Its almost like it wakes up your inner child – the small voice that is whispering about “What If….”
If you want your own copy then you can purchase it through Family On Bikes store.
One Amazing Families Adventure on Bikes – where a family of four travel for twelve-month, 9300-mile journey through nineteen US states and five Mexican states –Β sharing their experiences.
Have you ever had a dream?
If so tell me in 25 words or less “What Is Your Dream Adventure” – you will be in the running for your own copy of the book “Twenty Miles Per Cookies” – New Life on the Road has one paper copy to give away.
Cheers
Lisa

I’ll bet there isn’t an ounce [ or even a milligram ] of fat or excess weight on any of them. When I was 16 my mate Ian and I rode a quarter of the width of Victoria for our holidays. Not quite so fit now, but getting fitter.

Hi Harry,
So very true! They would have been lean fitting machines by the end of their trip π
That sounds like a great way to see Victoria…and to be healthy!

Wow. That sure is a very long bike. Did you all enjoyed it? It looks like a very relaxing day outdoors. It was nice to see you guys pushing each other as a family to their limits. I’m sure I would have given up and take a long break if I’d done that alone. Well done!
Kind regards
Wilson

Our dream adventure is to take the kids from our home to Prudoh Bay this summer while our teenagers are still under our roof. To unplug, camp, laugh, cry, moan, complain, stink, observe, stand in awe of America, play, read aloud, write letters & postcards, make food on an open fire, sing, pray, and just “be” TOGETHER for 3 weeks. I know it will be one of the best investments to give my kids.
Hi Laura,
Oh wow – that is one amazing dream adventure! You so have to do it π
Especially before the teenagers leave home!

I haven’t read the book, but I’ve followed the family on their website and they are such great people. So happy to see their book finally go to print. If the story is half as interesting as their website, it’s sure to be a winner.
