In our Motorhome we have a shower but no toilet. Which is ok but we really do need something! Considering we have brought every thing for our bus on eBay that is where we headed to sort our Toilet situation!
What Is That Smell?
David looked and brought a Porta Toilet on eBay (brand new at less than what you pay for them in the shops!). It was a reasonable price, and we thought we could put it in the shower and have a toilet for our boys. But only use it for peeing in! No poop allowed while living in a motorhome as we didn’t want the smell. Then we had to look around at all the Portable Toilet Cleaner products that didn’t have nasty chemicals.
At first we were using this Portable Toilet Cleaner….
First Portable Toilet Cleaner ~
Liquid Cleaner
But the smell was so bad! It smelt the whole bus out, even with the Shower Door closed. We even tried adding Nappy San to the bottom section of the porta toilet.
The smell was bad – that bad that I demanded the toilet to be taken out until we went to the shops for something different. So back to the camping store for this Portable Toilet Cleaner……
Our second Porta-loo toilet Cleaning Product!
It was ok for a few days, but then again it was bad! So bad that you would have been knocked over if you walked through our bus door. The smell was like a sewerage dump point multiply by 100.
Even smelt like someone had done a big S**T in the bus on the floor smell!
I heaved, our boys heaved. David was choking.
The Portable Toilet is now outside. Empty
Our porta-loo is now sitting outside 🙂
Under the front of the Motorhome. Where it will stay until we get a shower Toilet tent. That porta-loo is never going back into our shower floor. I couldn’t bear it – the smell would scare away the ghosts!
What would be ideal would be to put in a toilet and tank but we don’t have anywhere for one to fit
This is what I would love to have…….
Do You Use A Porta Loo?
What Products Do You Use?

Thanks Wheel Education for the great tip 🙂
Iki just bought a portable toilet and have used it last week while camping. there was absolutely no smell at all. only a bit after using it, but that lasted only while opening the slide to dispose of poo :). the waste container is hermetically sealed and no air escapes at all.
it was different when emptying the toilet. . . that smelled terrible.
Hi Peter,
We still do not like using our portable toilet! It really smells bad, but its good for when we are on the road and we do not access to a toilet!
I leave the emptying of the toilet to hubby – he agrees, it does smell bad when its ready to be emptied out!
Cheers
Lisa
Use the blue packs of the same brand that you bought. Not only will they kill the smell they’re so strong that the smell you’ll be greeted with when opening and closing the door on the toilet will be refreshing and wonderful. Even if you do number two in the toilet.
Thanks for the great tip 🙂
Hi Lisa, we have used chemical toilets in the caravan both inbuilt and portable porta potti, never underline never had a problem, we use the theory a toilet is a toilet and use for both #1 & # 2s. Yes a minor odour immediately after use for #2s however once the trap door is closed that odour dissipates within seconds, we use the commercially produced products without having any preference for brand as we have never had a bad brand and always look for the cheapest, recently purchased 2×1 litre bottles for $16-00 each. My question for you is you’re your
Ebay bought toilet sealing adequately, I ask as I purchased what I thought was a great buy from Aldi for $90-00 and it leaked, could not seal the tank, the seat cracked all round crappy machine, I then big the bullet spent another $160-00 and bought a Thetford and never had a problem lasting years. Good luck
Hi John,
YES! Ours wasn’t sealing correctly and that was the issue. We have since purchased a better one and are having more luck with it – mind you its now outside in a Toilet Tent so I am not sure if that is helping with keeping the smells away 🙂
Cheers

I have never tried the portaloo. It looks pretty handy for what it is. I am looking for a similar thing for when we go out on the road. Would you say that with enough care, you would have been able to keep it from smelling.
Yes! We have since starting using another Porta Loo {had to buy another one!} and changed the Products and so far all is good 🙂
Feeling really bad that you faced such an awful sanitary issue, but I am really surprised that it happened, last year in November I bought a portable toilet for my daughter, since she is 4 years old and I want he to learn outdoor toiletry manners also.
It is been 3 years of now, we haven’t faced any of such problems. Might be it is the difference of manufacturing company.
I wish that you get a better option to use, especially for outdoors.
Great article
Portable toilets provide a toilet seat located directly above a vault containing a chemical to disinfect and remove odours from the waste water. Recirculating toilets use chemicals as the toilet flush fluid. The wastes are separated from the fluid, wastes discharged to an internal holding tank, and the fluid reused.
yeah thanks for the information on how portable toilets work!!!
Adding Nappy San to the bottom section of the porta toilet is a great idea. For getting rid from nasty smell we should put it outside. Thanks for posting!
Hey!
Useful Post.
It is important to clean the toilets to maintain the hygiene. Wash the toilet top and bottom halves thoroughly outdoors using a garden hose. If a small amount of deodorant/disinfectant remains in the waste reservoir you can add water from a garden hose, slash the waste inside the reservoir to loosen it, and then empty this diluted wastewater out.
I really appreciate your efforts for writing this post. Hope this helps.
Good luck buddy! Keep doing great work!

The first time we moved into our house I couldn’t figure out what that ring was around in the toilet. I called my mom and she said to buy a stone to scrub it off. It works so good! Which reminds me, I need to buy another one, the rings are coming back lol.
