Did you know that our Motorhome is perfect for our family! Well, it would be if it had one more set of Bunk Beds, and a spa bath, and a bedroom door, and more water tanks! Gee the list could go on….
We now have a method that we are using in our motorhome. Its the latest craze going around – the Marie Kondo Method in Our Motorhome, Where we live with less stuff and clean out every cupboard. On a regular basis – freeing up space to have more adventures.
The Pros and Cons of Living in A Motorhome
I love that we don’t have our big old Queenslander anymore – it took up so much time trying to keep it clean, and it always needed so much work added to it! We spent over $30,000 on renovating it, and it could have easily taken another $30,000 – plus a lot of hard work…sweat, tears, fights, and more to get the renovations finished!
David is really good at doing renovations and is really with ideas but not so good with time/money!
If we had the time we never had the money. If we had the money we never had the time 🙂
Yes I did buy a Motorhome from eBay and then had to tell hubby afterwards. But someone had to take the plunge in our family – David talked about travelling for so long, and I am a person who jumps in with both feet and then think about things afterwards. Sometimes that works other times I should have thought ahead a bit more!
Living outside the Square…we sure do!
Well let’s get to the reason of this blog post!
The Pros of Living In A Motorhome
1. It only takes me about 30 minutes each morning to have beds made, kitchen dishes washed, kitchen dishes dried and put away.
2. Our bus is that small that there is a place for everything and everything has to be put it in is place – or we have nowhere to sit or stand or sleep!
3. We can spend more quality time with each of our sons as my days are more or less a lot easier!
4. I can share our amazing journey with what I love to do – Blog!
5. We get to dream – dream really big! Our imagination is expanded to the extreme as we meet so many other amazing people who are travelling, and learn from them through their experiences
6. Our boys are learning from life experiences and learning to get along better than they used to!
7. We get to dream about all of the places that our Motorhome can travel to!
8. Our boys have to learn to play with what we are able to travel with – we only have so much limited storage space. We have a big container of Lego and highly recommend that if you are travelling then that is the one toy that you do pack!
9. Due to our different out look on life we use the library more often for our boys – they get to borrow more books, more often and learn from what they are interested in – following their own interests/passion for learning!
10. Our Motorhome is our learning curve – to live a life that is outside the box!
11. The length of our Motorhome is a bonus. If we were any longer we would be considered too long for most Caravan Parks!
Our length of our Bus is good – we get to fit into spots that most big buses cant!
The Cons of Living In A Motorhome
1. David and I have no privacy – we don’t have four walls and a bedroom door. So we have to become very creative when we are wanting some adult time! That doesn’t really worry me as I am happy not to be making love all of the time. But David is a guy and that is something that all guys need!!! So we have to be creative with how we find time alone 🙂
2. There is no bath tub. That would be my one and only wish – to have a spa bath – I so miss not being able to soak my tired old bones at the end of the day!
3. There is not another set of bunk beds. I so wished there was. But we live with what we do have.
4. There is no storage bins under our Motorhome
5. There is not enough water tanks for us to be able to free camp.
6. There is no toilet – but then again that is not really a bad thing as I don’t have to clean the smelly thing!
7. We don’t have solar panels at the moment so we can’t go anywhere unless we have power!
8. The bus looks damn ugly on the outside, but gee she is a beauty on the inside.
9. There is no dryer for the days that it is raining and we have washing to do!
10. There is nowhere to hang up clothes – so I can’t hang up dresses anywhere!
That is the beauty of our Motorhome – there are many Pros and many Cons but its our lifestyle and our choices that have led us to live a life differently.
Not sure if it’s the right thing for all of our family, but its the best choices that we have for the time being!

This was a great read for me, as we prepare to move into our trailer. I think I will miss having a bathtub too and we definitely bringing the legos.

Hi Jessica,
Thanking you for stopping here! Great to read about another family moving into a “Different Way of living”!! You will love the changes, and the fantastic way of life.
Yeah the bath is long gone, the lego makes our kids day!
Cheers

Why don’t you use a child’s wading pool to soak in ? It doesn’t take up much space when not in use and you can buy those spa sets that use an ordinary bath tub .
Hi Terry,
Oh what a great idea! I am going to look into that 🙂
Cheers

Good list Lisa. I would never have thought of quite a few of those things. Also, I don’t think the bus looks too bad from the outside. Nothing that would give me cause for a second look anyways.

Hi Steve,
It was so much fun writing up the list of the Pros and Cons of living in a Motorhome! With regards to the oustide of the bus…I took the photo from a distance so that you can’t see all the paint that is peeling off, and the rust that is coming out 🙂
Cheers

This is a really interesting and honest list. Loving the idea of a kids pool for you to soak in!

I burst out laughing when I read about the lack of privacy part. Lisa you are funny and oh so true about what you say about the girl and guy thing.

Hi Jackie,
I thought it was a good one to throw in 🙂 Do you know that you are the only one to comment on what I wrote – it sure is a girl thing!

Interesting to hear about the cons! I was thinking about your life on the road today and much as I’d love the travelling, I do like having the space that a house provides… I think I might find it hard to do it on a permanent basis.
Little Gumnut recently posted..Monday in photos
Hi Little Gumnut,
I love the smaller spaces! Not having to do too much housework is my hi-light 🙂
I guess the lack of space is something that we all had to get used to – but its not for every family!

How much do you spent per month in gasoline and oil for your motor home and how far does that amount of fuel allow you to travel? WHAT ABOUT DOING LAUNDRY? Finally how much do you put aside/save each month for possible repair costs to
your motor home?
we have our own washing machine in the boot of our motorhome – one thing I did make sure we had room for because we always have so much laundry!!
The cost of living – way cheaper than living in a house with a mortgage and bills to pay – again yes we have to pay for repairs/upkeeping. Which we are happy to do -depends on the cost of petrol at the petrol stations to how much we would spend.
When we had our little campervan we loved it – cause it was so cheap to run and we parked up anywhere in it.
We are looking at getting another one asap 🙂
Im also thinking of permanently living in a motorhome hoping to be totally off the grid with solar etc.
One concern for me is im on a disability pension and once i sell my house that i own to buy a motorhome I’ll never be able to buy a house again. So it’s all in or nothing for me. I too would be interested to find out the running costs of something big like your’s. Also do you think you’d ever go back to house living?
we would never ever go back to house living – we house-sit a fair bit, and it takes a lot of work and time!!!
We don’t want to rebuy another home at all so for us not having a house is not an issue, but lots of people still travel and own a home/Homebase 🙂
The good thing of having motorhome is that, you are free to stop for site-seeing, taking pictures and rest while travelling. And also you can save a lot than renting hotels for days.
Sarah recently posted..The Ultimate Guide to Recreational Vehicles: Campervans, Motorhomes, and 4WD Campers
so very true – we saved so much money living in our motorhome as its our own home 🙂 also saved heaps when we had our little campervan, which we can’t wait to buy another one again 🙂
Given that most of the comments here are 6+ years old, I wonder if Lisa and her family are still travelling around/living in the bus?
We’re also considering taking off for a few years in a motorhome, before settling somewhere to buy a house.
Not sure I’d just “jump in” and buy something off ebay, and would certainly be addressing many of the “cons” listed above. (The ability to free camp for decent periods is absolutely top of our priority list!)
If you’re still out there Lisa, it would be good to get your updated perspective 6 years on…
yep still here – for some reason, I didn’t see this comment until I went to re-read this post today 🙂
Yep still love our lifestyle, wouldn’t change it for anything! We even used to travel in a little campervan which was the best way to travel ever – we used to park it up in places that no-one would ever think to park at. We slept in some amazing spots and had the best time.
Still, love our motorhome – its a home on wheels.
Hope you are following your dreams xx
Considering the same actions.
How have you found costs to stay at various places?
Have seen some posts that its around $40 per day in the parks for power sides, which i presume also have the toilet facalities and places to empty tanks if needed. Would you find that accurate?
its all relative – we don’t have a mortgage anymore, and we do free camping alongside paying to stay somewhere. We are happy to pay for caravan parks as it gives us power and water, and bathroom facilities.
We are also happy to get off the grid and go camping with nothing 🙂
It’s whatever we want it to be!
