When we think about motorhome holiday one of the first things that always comes to mind is the idea of a big and exciting family adventure. However, if you are planning your first holiday of this kind, the thought can be a little daunting as there is often a lot to think about and plan before you set off. With this in mind, here are some of the top tips from more seasoned travellers to help you plan the perfect holiday on the road.
Top Tips For Planning Your First Motorhome Holiday ::
1) Make a checklist
Before setting off on your family adventure you should always make a checklist of all of the more mundane things that can be surprisingly easy to forget. It’s always a good idea to start this list in the weeks leading up to your trip, this will ensure that you include everything that you and your family may need on a daily basis in order to live comfortably and avoid any pesky mid-holiday complications. Also if you don’t own a motorhome yourself, find one for rent.
2) Consider family dynamics
If you’re travelling with children of different ages it is important that you consider their individual needs and personalities and accept that there will be days where tension may arise due to such tight living quarters. Remember to give your children space when they need it and perhaps think up some team activities over which you will all be able to bond further.

3) Plan your itinerary
In order to ensure that your first motorhome holiday runs smoothly you should always plan, to some extent, your itinerary beforehand. This will not only make it easier for the driver as he/she will be able to follow a planned route, but will also keep the children happy as you will be able to decide on a number of attractions and activities to suit everyone before setting off, thus reducing stress and boredom.
4) Take a break
If you and your family want to do something a little different you could always think about taking a break from the motorhome lifestyle and spend a night or two in a hotel instead. If you’re travelling in Europe, for example, there are many budget-friendly hotel options available; it is possible to find a room in Prague for as little as 7 euros a night!
5) Be prepared for the weather
Depending on where and when you are travelling, you will probably experience some adverse weather conditions i.e. rain. It is therefore important that you and your family are fully equipped for various weather conditions, and that you consider indoor activities should the weather keep you confined to your motorhome. A good book, a family classic on DVD and an interactive board game are some great suggestions to get you started.
By considering these top tips you will find yourselves well on the way to thoroughly enjoying your first motorhome holiday. Just remember to document your trip, so you will be able to reflect upon your happy memories in the years to come.

New Life on the Road
I’m sort of a contradiction in that I like to be spontaneous but also want an itinerary of some degree. And very smart on planning plenty of short breaks! Even just a trip to beautiful San Francisco over here can encounter warm 70’s or chilly 50’s in a change of two hours time…so yes, yes plan for the weather. Good post, Lisa and Happy V-Day to all of you from us! 🙂

We know a super organized family that have a couple of boxes of camping equipment so when they decide to go camping out come the boxes and they leave. We have boxes as well but we definitely need to check them off against a checklist as you suggest because things have a habit of walking from them. 🙂
One thing I regularly forget is bathers although Marty says I do that on purpose so I can buy new ones 🙂
