Did you realise that it’s easier and cheaper to eat anything and everything without looking at the ingredients! It’s so much cheaper to eat crap food {nothing wrong if you can handle it!} then it is to eat healthy food. But because we learned about healing our bodies naturally and eating food good for the soul we have gone GlutenFree and Refined Sugar-free.
Can You Travel GlutenFree? Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. And when I don’t I really “pay” for it the next day. Not with money, but with stabbing pains throughout my stomach as if it’s going to rip me in half. When I get really bad all I can do is apply a castor oil pack to my belly.
Whats a castor oil pack? Its a face washer with castor oil, cling wrap over it, and a hot water bottle. Its good for any tummy pains, including period pain.
Anyway back to “How Do You Eat Gluten Free When Traveling” – it’s hard sometimes. Depending on where we are going, and where we are staying. If need be we stay where we can make our meals – a unit with a kitchen in a hotel, or in a caravan park that has a kitchen.
We mostly take our own food if we are traveling with our campervan. If we are going with our swags again we try and take our own food.
It’s not worth the pain of having food that is not gluten-free. We love it when we go to the Sunshine Coast as they have so many amazing cafes that are gluten-free. Along with Sydney or Melbourne. It’s the little country towns where we usually don’t have much luck.
Or the bakery that doesn’t sell glutenfree options – Cameron and I seem to the ones that must stick with Gluten-free options when traveling. Sometimes we don’t and we both end up with rashes, headaches and tummy aches. Not worth the pain 🙁
Childers Queensland
In Childers, there is a wonderful old cinema that has the best coffee and they also sell Raw Gluten Free, Refined Sugar-Free Treats. It made our weekend stay down there so much easier when Kyle had his Karate Competition a few weeks back.
So yes you can Travel Gluten-Free. Is it cheaper? No. Is it always possible? No. Will we break our rules when we have to? Yes – but lately I have been really careful not to because it’s just not worth the stabbing pain.
If you are on a cruise, let the crusie ship kitchen know. They do have gluten free options.
If you are staying at a Hotel with a restaurant then let them know – they will find a gluten free option.
Again if you are out at a restaurant, tell the waiter. We did that in Rockhampton at a Chinese Restaurant. We let him know that we are Gluten Free and MSG free as we are allergic to MSG. He kindly went to the kitchen and made sure our sauces were made with no MSG and all gluten was taking out of the selected menu items 🙂
Here are our basic rules for Traveling Gluten-Free
- Take our own food as much as possible
- Meal plan ahead of time – it’s easier if we meal plan our travels so that we can carry gluten-free items in case we can’t find any glutenfree cafes/options
- Carry our Magnesium Spray with us – I always massage my stomach with it and it helps to ease the pain
- Stick to places that have a gluten-free option
- Book accommodation with a kitchen facility available so that we can buy glutenfree, refined sugar-free from a supermarket and make our own meals
- Let planes/trains know ahead of time that we are glutenfree as they will provide options that are safer. They won’t have refined sugar free option but at least it’s gluten-free.
We know what our family can and cant eat. We know what preservatives to avoid, what colours and additives. We have done our research and we stick with certain brands that are safe for our boys and for us. We are particular with our bread, our milk and have cooked breakfasts.
We know what we can safely eat for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Sticking to whole foods, taking our own foods, and preparing ahead when going out and about sure helps us!
When we are camping David makes the most amazing Roast Dinner with our Themocooker. Do you want the recipe?
Do You Travel GlutenFree?
What About Refined Sugar Free?
Share your hints and tips on how you travel with your own food requirements – are you vegan, or vegetarian? Or do you eat the Paleo way? Would love to hear what you eat while traveling and if you have any restrictions because of health or spiritual needs?
This is just our way of traveling, our way of life. It’s way easier to go camping with our own foods, our own meals and our brands of foods that we know we can trust.
Can You Travel GlutenFree?
So yes its possible to travel Australia Gluten-free. Not always the easier cheaper option but still possible!
