Do you remember back when we went camping at Rainbow Island because he said “Lets Go Camping” and then onto Fraser Island and we explored as much as possible for the day? We looked at the Ship Wreck and continued on our way.
We drove all the way to Champagne Pool. after which we went to a fishing spot/water hole.
Our drive came across all of these amazing cliffs –
Before we left Fraser Island it was a mutual decision to stop and walk from our older sons car to Lake Wabby Walking track. Whose great idea was that? {It so was not my idea or even Dave’s idea!!!}
Our oldest son and our youngest son took off – they were on a race to see how fast they could walk on the track to Lake Wabby.
In the hottest part of the day, in Summer Time in Australia, on the hottest of the sand, we have ever walked on. And I was left alone to walk
Stupid me – I was walking with our Elf on the Shelf and all I could think about was how our Dog CoCo didn’t like them. Every time Coco had seen our Elf on the Shelf she tried to rip them to pieces. And you all know that there are dingos on Fraser Island – I was looking around the whole time, thinking if need be those Elf on the Shelf would be ditched.
I walked for ages by myself…..until David caught up to me. And I had no hat – yeah I was really stupid that day. Burnt big time. All I could think was Gosh is this The Day He Nearly Killed me by leaving me alone in the bush, walking along the longest pathway. over the hottest sand.
But it was all worth it because from our strart of our walk…..
To then coming out to see this….
I reckon that it was far too hot that day and the dingos were all hiding from us – they would have burnt their pads off of their feet if they had of walking over the sand!
But we did see them as we were about to get back into the car.
The dingos all looked very skinny with most of their ribs showing. They must be because most of their food source is no longer on the Island – the wild horses were taken away.
If we were to camp there I so would only camp in the Fenced Sections – especially with our kids. Mind you Kyle is way taller than me – but seriously they are not afraid of us humans anymore and their natural instinct to find food from us was very clear.
We respected them and they respected us. They are not a cute pet that can be patted, so we made sure to stay away from them, and take a picture before getting back into the car. We made sure we didn’t carry any food around with us, and used bins that were provided to put rubbish into. Its easy to keep safe around the Dingos – all you need to do is follow the guidelines set out by the rangers on Fraser Island 🙂
While we were walking back to the car I was so bright red in the face – no one was allowed to take photos! And all I could keep on saying was is this “The Day He Nearly Killed Me” – because I was so out of breathe, my feet felt like they were on fire and the climb from that Lake back to the Lake Wabby Walking Track was so steep – that steep that David had to come down to help me back up!!
I am only joking with the blog title! But gee that day will always be one that our family remember – they teased me for ages afterwards because I couldn’t cope with the hot sand and the heat of the day.
Have You Ever Walked The Lake Wabby Walking Track?
If so – and it was in summer time – you so would understand why I was so red in the face that day!!! You so would understand why I was joking and asking if he was trying to kill us all that day
PS – We are only joking – we loved our Fraser Island Trip and we can’;t wait to go back. Our oldest son took us there in his amazing new 4WD and we can’t wait to experience more adventures with him as he has lots of off road trips around Australia planned as soon as he can 🙂
Cheers
Lisa
New Life on the Road
We’ve not been to Fraser Island yet, but it sounds like an amazing experience. Based on your story, I now know to make sure to bring a hat, plenty of sunscreen, and a cover-up. I’ll also be sure to go at a cooler time of year, or at least, wear something on my feet.
So thanks for teaching us what NOT to do. Your article was a public service announcement, believe it our not. And by the way, I loved your title.

Haha – so glad we are now a public service announcement for Fraser Island. Highly recommend visiting the gorgeous Island – there is so much to see and do and a few days to a week would be ideal.
And yes in a cooler time of the year, with a hat is ideal 🙂
so glad someone got my crazy sense of humour 🙂 !!!
