Its important when starting out with Homeschooling to find a support system. It is not an easy task by any means but with Homeschool Resources, support, team work and the right attitude anything is possible!
Homeschooling Children Of All Ages
As I have talked about in How To Homeschool and discussed in Homeschooling In Australia we are homeschooling our five boys and they all have different needs, different levels of books and different styles of learning. My oldest is crazy about sport, while my second boy loves reading. So to encourage Hayden to read I make sure we have sports books in the house, or visit the library so he can check out the sport section.
The Library is a fantastice resource for homeschooling children and their parents. It is a great way to spend the day, looking at books that will relate to their school work as well as keep you sane when you need a day out of the house. Due to the limited amount of storage space that I will have on our bus we will not have a huge collection of books on hand, but will be visiting many libraries as possible along the way.
More Homeschool Resources
I have homeschooled two of our boys a few years back and found a great support system online for parents. I googled all about Homeschooling and found Yahoo had a whole section of homeschooling groups. Then I also asked around within the group and found out that there was homeschooling sports activity that meet once a week down at Caboolture. Through that group I found so many different resources that were perfect for our family. Even Bunnings had a craft group every second week!
These Are The Books We Have Ordered!
Hayden being the oldest has the most books ordered. We are trying to catch him up to where he should be (as if he was homeschooled for many years) so that his grades are higher. Once he has completed as much as he can in the next 6-12 months he will then be enrolled into tafe to complete year 11 and year 12 in one year. That way he will be able to go straight into the Navy as an officer. Another Homeschool Resources that I found out just by asking!
Zachery being the second boy, but so close in age will almost have the same amount of book work. Some is nearly the same level, others are more science based. We even have a chemistry set to go with the book work – which Zac is so looking forward to…and NO I have told him he cant make a BOMB!!! He was a bit disappointed with that as there is a huge tree in his Grandparents yard that needs to be cut out 🙂
Our Third Boy!
Nicholas – well….. Nic struggled with the test book. He would be in year 7 at school this year. Frank and Valerie was not surprised that he struggled…..he was so quiet in class and did his work that the teachers never picked up that Nicholas actually did not take in what was being taught. So his books are going to be taken back to basic Maths/English/Science and Geography so that he can get his confidence levels back up, work out what his stregths are and how we can help him improve.
Cameron – Even though he has speech issues (which he was meet to recieve help for while at school!) he scored the highest in each book so his books that are coming will cater for his needs. He has the Maths/English/Science/Geography for his grade and will fly through them.
Our Youngest Boy!
Kyle was in prep last year. His teacher kept telling us how little Kyle could do, how he could not keep sitting still long enough and how he needed a lot of assessments to see what was wrong with him. Lets just say that Kyles teacher and I never saw eye to eye and most days it was better if David picked up Kyle from School. He passed his Maths test with ease, but was stuck with reading so his books have again catered for where he is at. I am so looking forward to seeing where Kyle goes with his work this year, and how much he does take in.
Homeschooling Assistance
I have spoken with Homeschooling Supplies a few times over the phone and they have answered all my questions and have re-assured me that I will have all the Homeschool Resources that I need to assist the boys.
If I ever do get stuck I can always google for answers!!! Google is amazing and was my number one tool for Homeschool Resources last time I was homeschooling, so I think it will be again this time 🙂
If you have any more questions…..then ask away!
Cheers

Hi Lisa, I am still learning about the concept of homeschooling, but from what I can see so far, homeschooling resources is perhaps the most critical thing that needs to be right here. The kids need to be taught the right things, from the right books. Thanks for another article on homeschooling.

Thanks for your thought Sean !!! Homeschooling is getting interesting thats for sure. I am amazed with how much one can search on google for Homeschooling Resources! Love how the internet provides so many answers for so many areas of life. Where would we all be without the internet!!!
Cheers

Good on you Lisa for taking up the challenge of homeschooling. I think it is a great way for kids to learn, especially when parents think outside the box and add “other” activities as well. Teachers have students for a year, parents have them for a lifetime and need to know where their kids’ education is up to. My kids had “gaps” in their education, which no-one picked up until too late, just made it harder for when they were older.

Hello Carolyn,
We have noticed huge gaps in our older boys….it seems the longer they go through school the more gaps can and will occur. So lucky that Kyle (our five year old) will be taught the better way from such an early age. I am going to be pushing my older two boys to try catch them up so that they can join the navy with high grades 🙂
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your family and what you think about education.
Cheers

Hi Lisa
As a family which has homeschooled our children into adulthood, I can only encourage you with your efforts. An enormous range of resources are available from which you can draw to prepare your children for their adulthood. One of the primary approaches with our children was to identify their interests & encourage them to immerse themselves by discovering what they could. Over time, new interests would emerge & they would do the same. This was to help them learn how to learn which was a valuable skill they continue to use throughout their lives.
Look forward to hearing more about your experiences.
Regards
Terry

Hi Terry,
What a great idea…kids learning to teach themselves in all aspects of life. I think tha I left it too late with our older boy but our younger ones are enjoying the concept of learning what they are interested in.
Cheers
