I thought that I would Share Our Experience with the Navy so that if others are keen to join or know someone who is wanting to join then they can gather information for the process.
Yesterday I shared a Photo and a very brief post on “Here We Go Again” – our second son is Joining the Navy. We already have Our Oldest Son in the Navy, and he went through the same process that everyone goes through to be accepted.
Dressed For Success.
There are a number of things that you need to do on your first Interview/first appointment.
But if there is only one thing that I hope you take from this information is this…..Dress For Success.
How To Get Into The Navy?
Look the part.
Go for the First Interview with the idea that You Have Already Got the Job and you are there so they can put a face to the name on their paperwork.
We {David and I} went through the same peep talk with our oldest.
We said to walk through the door, with shoulders back. Smile on your dial. The air of attitude that the Navy job is yours, all you are there for is the start date.
And so far it has worked.
On Tuesday.
I had to be up early and out the door around 7.00am. We had a drive ahead of us and we wanted to make sure we got to the appointment with plenty of time to spare. Which was a good thing because I could find a parking spot and Zachery could gather his head space.
Walking Into The Building
Before we got to the building I could feel the unease coming off from Zachery. Yet once he walked into that Building I could feel a different vibe. And it was a good one.
He even said “I am going to be fine Mum, I have got this”. And I felt like he was and he did.
I got a bit teary because I knew that this New Life {New Journey} that he is going after will be HUGE for him. It will be a big journey of stepping away from teenage years into young Manhood – one where he will be on his own for many major decisions.
A journey where we know we are letting go of another one of children.
Yet I know deep within that he will be OK, what ever choices he makes are going to be good ones.
So Here Is MY List of How To Get Into The Navy ::
1. Dress the part. For Men – Smart Dress Pants, Tucked in shirt, Good Dress shoes. For Women – Smart Long Skirt or Black Dress Pants. Nice Buttoned Shirt, also tucked in. Good Dress Shoes {make sure they are clean if not new}
2. Short Clean Presentable Hair Style – if you like long hair, get it cut!! Or at least give it a good wash and tie it back of your face.
3. For men make sure you shave your face that morning.
4. Walk with your shoulders back and down, with hands out of our pockets.
5. Talk with confidence. Yeah you might be Shitting It Scared on the inside but cover it up on the outside.
6. RELAX – go in with the attitude that this is your JOB – all you are there for is the start date!!!
7. Fill out all of your paperwork before hand. Because of our sons age they both have had to get our permission from both of us to say that we agree to the career choices.
8. Research your positions that you are applying for – the more you know about your Role Job then more the Navy/Army/Airforce will know you are keen.
9. Smile
10. Be true to yourself – if you are chasing a life long dream – then put it out there and it will come true!! Answer the questions with the attitude of “YES, this is What I Want, This is the Direction I want my life to go to and make sure you put across your reasons why they should accept you into the forces.
11. If you have Brothers or Sisters already in the Forces then share that in your interview with “I have heard from my Brother/Sister and I know what I am entering” stories. Or even along the lines of “I have family members who are in the forces and what they have told me makes me realise that this is the right career for me”
12. Study for your Aptitude Test. This will be conducted on your first interview – and depending on your results will depend on what job offers from all three forces are presented to you.
Our Second Sons News
So Zachery has completed his first interview ~
which lasted about 5 hours.
He completed his Aptitude Test and has been offered nearly every job offer in the Navy, Army and the Air Force. Now its a matter of him deciding what he wants to apply for.
So far he has been successful ~ that could change with the next interview but if he goes in with the same “Vibe” as what he did on Tuesday then all will be Fine 🙂
What’s Next?
Then its an interview over the phone with his case officer.
Next after that will be his second lot of interviews….not sure when but do know that the Job he is going for is a Priority Job so I expert the next step to be fairly soon…..
I hope its not too soon….but again our older son was less than three months from start to finish to get in!!
Have You Got A Son/Daughter Already In the Forces?
Or Someone Trying to Get Into the Navy, Army or Air Forces?
Would love to hear your experience.
Thanking you for following our Journey.
Cheers

New Life on the Road.
What excellent advice for anyone wishing to enter the forces, or indeed any job. I have interviewed job applicants before and agree that the way people dress certainly has an impact. Arriving in board shorts and thongs, or a low cut blouse and the shortest of skirts, does not say “I really want this job and are trying to impress you with how much I want it”. I hope Zachery finds his dream job – he deserves to. 🙂

Hi Jan,
Totally agree about the Dress Code for applying for any Job!!!
There was one time when I was at a Bunnings Interview and one of the ladies who was applying had a white blouse on with no bar and her buttons were exploding. She never made it to the second interview 🙂
Fingers and Toes are crossed for Zachery!
Cheers

Lisa, I completely agree with the previous comment. In fact, if not sure then it’s definitely better to err on the side of over-dressed rather than under. Well done to Zachary (and you!)

Hi Leanne,
Great tips – better to be over dressed!!
And thanks for the well wishes for our son. Our Fingers and Toes are crossed for the next stage.
