Yesterday we went for a drive! My itchy feet hardly ever like to stay home…..so when I can have our older son’s car for the day I like to make the most of it….and discover new places.
With us travelling SLOWLY around Australia we get to see a LOT of places that we might miss if we were doing fast Travel. So even though I am keen to already move on from Wollongong, I am still very grateful that I am able to explore and discover things like this ::
We were walking towards Sea Cliff Bridge when we looked across the road and was surprised to see a “Thong Tree” – where people have nailed a Thong to a tree…some even had sayings on them ::
Auzzie Trip ~
Wonder if they were backpackers travelling around Australia, or from Australia?
Rocken Australia 2011 ~
Marisa and Lisa (nope not me!!)
Loved this one….Steve Loves Sue ~
A thong of love!
After drooling over the Thongs we walked around the corner to the start of the bridge walk. It was a perfect day…sun was out but it wasn’t too hot, and we had no where that we had to be so we could take our time with walking over the bridge!
With our Big Scooter (here you can read about our Big Scooter Review) we all took turns riding, so that the walk went quicker. We have two boys who are becoming good little walkers!
The start of our Walk….the view was incredible. Looking out to Sea we could Fishermen (fisherwomen?), Rock Pool Explores, Big Cargo Boats, Scuba Divers and even crazy Kids jumping off the Rocks into the Sea!
Watching the People fishing off the rocks, so very surprised to see a group of guys…two of them decided to jump off the rocks and into the Water!! Crazy or what? Both Cameron and Kyle was wondering how they did not get swept into the Rocks from the waves?
The Water Looked So Inviting ~
and so high up!!
While we walking we kept looking down. At first I didn’t think too much about it. But I soon realised how high up we were – and kept asking Kyle to walk in the shade, which was on the other side of me – the side closer to the road.
That way he was not near the railings along Sea Cliff Bridge, not near the side of the walk way closer to the BIG Drop. Mind you the railings were high enough to protect children, just not high enough for our climbing monkey!!
Cameron LOVED it when its his turn ~
Riding the Big Scooter with his Drink Bottle.
The Building of the Bridge ::
* The bridge took 18 months to build
* cost $49 million
* 60,000 rocks have been imported to build the access track
* with 11,000 Cubic Metres of Concrete used in the Bridge Structure.
* Overall length of the bridge is 665m
Opening of the Bridge ::
* 11 December 2005
* 16,000 pedestrians walked the bridge on the day of the opening
* Seacliff Brdige has become an icon to the people of Wollongong and NSW
* Welcoming ten of thousands of tourists annually to the coastal road
Cameron didn’t think it was built over the water, so we stopped at this spot to have a better look at how the bridge is built close to the Cliff, and Close to the water!
This View showed the track well!!
Gee we were very HIGH up!
Kyle and I were Playing around!
Having lots of fun pulling silly poses 🙂
We made it across the bridge, and back to the Car, with lots of time left in the afternoon for a slow drive home. Even though we stopped at a Pub that was Closed Down, and another Pub where they didn’t have an eftpos machine, all in all it was one gorgeous day….one I would happily go back to in June to see if we can spot any Whales, Dolphins or Seals as they travel the ocean.
Because of the Road Closing down,
and before the Sea Cliff Bridge was built, this business closed down.
I stopped to take photos, next door where there was a house I parked the car to look out over the Ocean. While I was taking photos the owners Dog came over to us, and so did the owner. I questioned him about the Hotel…and he let me know it closed down due to the Road collapsing. It is for sale but because its been so long it has been let go, and is now waiting for the new owners to be approved for renovations!
What I found so interesting was how someone decided one of the window’s needed to look beautiful ::
There was beauty among the Run Down Building…and it made us smile!
Oh if only the New Owners were able to renovate and take advantage of the view!
Yep that was the View from the Back of the Hotel….wondering how much the Hotel is for sale?
Gee imagine renovating that one!!!
Would love to see this one returned to its former glory.
We Love Sea Cliff Bridge Walk – Have You Been There?
Thanking you for following our Journey.

New Life on the Road.
We have driven over that road but I did not realize you could walk on the edge of it. Love that big scooter.

It was the best day out n about ~ not too hot, not too cold! And the Scooter was so much fun…even I got to have a go on it 🙂
If you are ever back down near Sea Cliff Bridge I highly recommend the walk – and the Thong tree is a classic.
It is such a beautiful walk along the bridge. Did you manage to get to the other pub down the road, the views are spectacular!

We did stop at The Scarborough Hotel but they didn’t have eftpos to buy coffee and cake with…so that means we will be going back again sometime soon 🙂
I just love quirky things like that thong tree – what a cool thing to happen upon! If you had only had a spare thong to add to the collection! 😉
I can’t help but feel a little sorry for that tree with all the thongs nailed to it. Some really nice photos and stunning scenery too!
