After arriving in Sydney the other night, and closing my eyes while getting from the airport to where I am staying {I think I left my finger prints indent in the leather car seats} I thought I would walk to pick up a parcel from the post office, instead of driving. The GPS said it was an easy walk, but I didn’t look at the streets of where it was taking me and I ended up Walking The Streets of Redfern. The back streets of Redfern.
There are so many apartment buildings, all the same, all blending in together. I never ever realised how many people lived in Sydney. It actually reminded me of Liverpool in England.
After we picked up the parcel we decided to look for a Geocaching in the area. which took us away from where we had to be to walk back, but it was so worth it as it meant that we got to see the oldest house in Sydney! Its under renovation, sure hope they can return it to its formal glory.
This gorgeous old church was in Bedford Street. Spooky hey! You know how I am into the importance of street names, and how it relates to our life. Yeah I was meant to see this old church in Bedford Street.
The Oldest House in Sydney – its the original house from the early convict ages. Hope it gets renovated to its former glory. Hope it doesn’t get taken down to make way for more units or made into a brand new house!
This is where the geocache was hiding. Its in Strawberry Hills. The information from Geocaching
“Cleveland House is of State significance as a rare surviving gentlemen’s residence of the 1820s, built for a prominent convict emancipist merchant Daniel Cooper. The house is believed to the be the work of Francis Greenway and is an example of a good quality residence of the time.
It is believed to be the oldest existing purpose built house in the city of Sydney.
Over the years it has been a Residence, Convent Hospital and Aged Care Facility.”
Hope it is enough to mean that its heritage listed and cant be torn down!
Love the name of “The Wanderer Restaurant” in Sydney. Maybe one time we will return and have a look inside!
Yep that is the smallest magnetic caches that you can find when geocaching!
I am so glad we decided to walk the Streets of Redfern instead of driving. When you get out and about you will be amazed at what you see instead of when you drive somewhere! We are seeing more of Sydney then we thought we would, even though we have been here before!
And we are loving our time here, we are here for Family Time but also we are taking advantage of getting out and about exploring. We have a wonderful time to share so check back soon!
Would you get out and about to explore, Walking The Streets of Redfern – the Back streets?
Cheers
Lisa
