So our youngest, who is meant to be my baby forever! Has decided that he is ready to do a Camping Trip Alone. He has researched a Fossiking area about 10 hours away and he has it all planned out – how long it would take him to get there, how long he could stay there, and how long it would take him to get back to us.
But being the very mean Mummy that I am I won’t let him go. I won’t let my baby walk for days on end, with his swag and backpack. With little water and hardly any food just so that he can escape explore all alone.
Yeah He is still so mad at me, and he still can’t understand why I say he cant go. So he packed up his stuff and set up a camp spot down at the back of the property and didn’t want to see us for two days.
Its not the best spot to be sleeping considering he does get up at night time and in the morning doesn’t remember!
But he camped there – having a Camping Trip Alone by himself for one night and two days.
He caught his own fish down at the River, but unfortunately he dropped it into the fire so he did come home for dinner – but went back to his camp site straight away.
It felt weird not having him in our motorhome overnight – made me realise that we are almost getting to the stage when it will be down to one child and then down to none.
Scary thought! Can’t wait for grandkids.
What would you do if your son who is only 13 asked to leave on a Camping trip to a location no where near you?
He sure is going to live his life with so much passion and purpose. We Can learn so much from this kid – he follows his heart, he wont let anyone steal his dreams, and his so determined to live the way he wants and not what is expected.
Would You Take A Road Trip Alone At 13?
{Ps – He is now talking to me again and he is back living in our motorhome. But he still wants his Camping Trip Alone to happen sometime soon!!!}
Cheers
Lisa
New Life on the Road
Living your dream is always pleasing and i loved this blog. At the age of 13 none of us dared to do so but huge appreciation to your kid. Thanks for inspiring story.
Yep – our son is one amazing kid who loves life and exploring – he sure knows what he wants from life 🙂
We love camping and hiking as a family ( 2 teenage girls). I am not sure if I would let them camp solo, no no way we would do that.

Yep we couldn’t let Kyle go camping trip alone but he went back down the back of the property for one night of camping and loved it! He still can’t accept that I won’t let him hike halfway across Australia by himself 🙂
That’s so cool! He is very resourceful in doing it. Love it!
