After our wonderful visit to Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre, and our crappy night stop at Red Bank Rest Area {Number 313 in the Camps 7 Book} we wanted to see and explore as much as possible in Tamworth New South Wales. We have been to the Music Festival previously but haven’t seen Tamworth in more depth. We headed to the great Information Centre, a great place where you can get free maps of the area and suggestions of what to do/where to go.
They pointed us in the right direction for our family! Yep a Playground – not just any playground. Its the only playground of its kind in regional Australia. And is one we will be returning to when ever we are down that way once more! Tamworth Regional Playground is suitable for all family members – with a cafe close bye.
It has a Skywalk – the only one like it in the southern hemisphere. You will never ever see a Skywalk like it – with four towers, three giant slides – It measures over nine metres tall and has a huge 13 metre slide.
Tamworth Regional Playground ::
This golden guitar stands as a tribute to the original golden guitar which was designed as a trophy for the Australasian Country Music Awards when they started in January 1973. In contrast to the trophy, which is 22cm high, this Golden Guitar stands 12 Metres high. It is a faithful replica of the Original, which explains the absence of Strings, while the original is Cast in Bronze, this Golden Guitar is crafted from Fiberglass. A list of the winners of Golden Guitars reads like a who’s who of Australasian Country Music, with Slim Dusty having received the most awards over the years, thus it is appropriate that this golden guitar was officially unveiled on January 22nd 1966 by Slim Dusty M.B.E.
From the Golden Guitar we headed to the Tamworth Regional Playground. Where David and I got to have a coffee from the Hopscotch Restaurant and Bar, while both boys had healthy smoothies. Over looking the amazing playground! Even Cameron had the best of time ever.
David and I so wanted a go, but both of us looked and realised it was for only little kids – can you imagine if we got stuck up there and had to call the fire brigade to come and cut us out, yeah that would be something we could never ever live down!
Yep even teenagers will enjoy the Tamworth Regional Playground.
The Regional Playground even has its own Exercise Section ::
While Cameron, Kyle and David were at the Playground I decided to go for a walk to stretch my legs, and found a Geocache that wasn’t too far. Which then lead me to the Songwriters Honor Roll Cache. Located in King George V Avenue – in the little park {near Hungry Jacks}
“Brian Young” – 1999 Song Maker Award
1984 Song Maker Aware – Slim Dusty
Stan Coster 1982 Song Maker Award

1992 Song Maker Award Graeme Connors
1997 Song maker Award Tom McIvor
2006 – Song Maker Award Rick Aitchison
2009 – Song Maker Award The Schneider Sisters
After finding the Cache I headed back to our family, and we decided to drive up to “Oxley Scenic Lookout”- which is so very steep. That steep that our Campervan didn’t like it and was over heating. Mind you its a bit too steep for pulling up a camper trailer!
We would have loved to stay in Tamworth for at least a month to explore all there is on offer, but we had to move on to head south. We were so very close to seeing our family – and couldn’t wait to go free camping for a week with our second son Zachery.
Next we will share where we stay when in Sydney, and our favorite free camping spot. Stay tuned for more amazing places, pictures and adventures.
Have You Been To Tamworth?
Do You Love The Regional Playground?
Cheers
Lisa
